A Bit of Merv's History

Well it all started in 1930 when I was born during the
depression, then in 1939 when I was 8 years old my Mother
died of stomach cancer, they didn't know much about cancer
in those days. I had three sisters whom were all older then me
and the oldest being 12 years my senior. After my Mothers
death I went to live with my oldest sister and her husband.

Next came world War II, and both my brother-in-laws went off
to war. A duplex was rented one sister lived upstairs and one
in the lower with there families, and this is where we spend
the years during the War. Also during the summer months I
worked on a farm for $1.00 a day and room and board, which
cut down on the expenses at home.

In 1949 after graduating from high school I enlist in the USAF
on a 3 year enlistment, during this time I married to the girl I
had started going with when she was in 8th grade, and I was a
junior in High School, and to whom I still am married.

At the end of my 3 year tour, I found with my benefits in
service were better than I could get in civilian life, so I
re-enlisted. Needless to say I spend 20 years, retiring from
the Air Force in 1969. And already had a good Upholstery
business going at that time, so I just made it a full time
business.

Several very important things happen to me while in the
service. We had three children who by the way the youngest
is now also retired from the USAF. During my tour I was
assigned to Chanute AFB (which is now Closed) for Instructor
duty on fighter Aircraft. During this time I got a chance and
enrolled in The Parachute and Fabric course and this is where
I started my training into the Upholstery trade, this was where
I learned my sewing machine. I must of really loved it as I'm
still doing it.

There were a lot of mistakes made during those earlier years,
it sure would have been nice to have had some one to show
me the basic steps. Now after I know them I have choices of
doing things different from what they were before. You'll see
the factory way may not be your method of doing it, that is
mass production and usually paid for on the piece work
schedule.

I taught different Upholstery classes for the Fox Valley
Technical School from 1969 through 1986 in the Appleton and
surrounding areas.

After retiring, my self, my oldest son and other people opened
different stores, with a total at one time of three. We
expanded from Upholstery, to Carpeting, Wall paper, Window
Treatment & ceramic tile, basically Home Interiors.

My oldest son is now the owner of two of the stores and the
other one has been sold. These stores were about 40 miles
apart in a triangle location.

My other son which is the youngest is Retired from the USAF
and is a financial Advisor & lives in Norfolk NE with wife Pam
and their two girls

We also had a Daughter Linda, who was married, had two
sons, adopted daughter, who we lost to cancer April 2, 2004
at the age of 52.

Thank You
